JCPDA who are we?
JOHN CALVIN PRESBYTERY DISASTER ASSISTANCE
Our Mission Statement:
John Calvin Presbytery Disaster Assistance (JCPDA) enables congregations to partner with the presbytery and Presbyterian Church (USA) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities affected by crises and catastrophic events.
History:
John Calvin Presbytery has had an active disaster assistance group for several years. After hurricane Katrina in 2005, the group was re-energized and recommitted themselves to serve in this mission of caring. Since that time JCPDA has made two week long trips each year, fall and spring, to an area recently affected by disaster. In addition the group has made one to three day trips around our Presbytery to help meet specific short term needs.
Scope:
Congregations and individuals throughout the Presbytery have been involved in the activities of JCPDA.
Disaster Mission Trips: It is estimated that over half of the congregations in our Presbytery have been represented by over 100 individuals who have traveled to the site of a disaster. On site we have tackled every kind of job imaginable. For example, we have, mucked out houses, installed dry wall, painted, hung doors, redone bathrooms and kitchens, repaired roofs, installed exterior sheathing, wrapped a house with Tyvek, installed insulation, and so much more. Trips have been made to the Mississippi gulf coast, Lake Charles, LA, Cedar Rapids, IA, Nashville, TN, and Joplin, MO.
Disaster buckets and hygiene kits: John Calvin Presbytery is unique in the Midwest for our commitment to filling disaster buckets and hygiene kits. We have delivered more than 300 disaster buckets to the distribution center in Little Rock in the last 4 years.
Emergency Response Guide: These guides were prepared and distributed to every congregation in the Presbytery. Churches that follow the suggestions in that guide will be better prepared should disaster strike their church or community.
